Dorchester Science Festival 2023

Families and people of all ages attended this free event, and experienced an array of exciting, hands-on activities where they could explore underwater worlds.

Participants worked with scientists and artists to investigate and learn about freshwater habitats and their biodiversity.

Sound Fishing: led by Adrian Newton (Bournemouth University), David Rogers (electricbackroom STUDIO) and Lynn Davy involved getting the public listening to nature through a variety of microphones and hydrophones.

We’ve been a part in the biennale since 2010 and there’s always a good crowd of spectators. This is an international art biennale – and it’s a great excuse to hang out on the beach and around the town where multiple events will be taking place on the day.

Two sessions of four workshops – Working with Professor Genoveva Esteban (Bournemouth University), using microscopes as she explores the beginnings of life and biodiversity on our planet – Working with Will Beaumont (The Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust), as he studies the salmon and trout migration – Working with Professor Adrian Newton (Bournemouth University) and David Rogers (electricbackroom STUDIO), listening to underwater sounds using hydrophones – Working with Sam Lloyd (Dorset Wildlife Trust and RSPB), identifying birds and their call sounds. Cape Farewell Director David Buckland and eco-poet Helen Moore will also accompanying the groups.
